Presentation from Joomla Day New England 2012

Written by Jeremy Wilken

I'm proud to have been able to speak at Joomla Day New England last month, and the topic was about migrating from Joomla 1.5 to 2.5. I found one particular response to be quite interesting.

@rdmond: Thanks @gnomeontherun. My dread about upgrading is now informed dread. #jd12ne

Will Joomla ever be what you want it to be?

Written by Jeremy Wilken

At Gnome on the run, Joomla is a major part of our work. Having been speakers at and organizers of several Joomla events, naturally we have a focus on the future of Joomla and what impact we can make. This past weekend we saw the first Joomla Roadmap Meeting (watch clips here) happen at Joomla Day New York. It seems to have sparked a lot of discussion on social media channels about what Joomla ought to be, where it ought to go, and why.

Watching and participating in this discussion, I began to wonder more about if it is possible to come to a reasonable consensus about what direction Joomla should go. I realized very quickly: it probably will never be exactly what you want, but there are ways to change that.

Joomla Site Developer's Pledge

Written by Jeremy Wilken

This past week I (Jeremy) was invited to speak at Joomla! Day Austin, a full day of Joomla from start to finish. It was a unique concept where the speakers walked attendees through the steps of building a website, from the planning phase, to a design workflow, to choosing and developing extensions, to site deployment. If you weren't there, you missed out, but have no fear some pieces should be available on the website at some point.

My presentation was about using and evaluating Joomla extensions. Its a big part of a Joomla site developer's responsibility, and at the end I made all of the attendees stand up and take a simple oath to be responsible when using extensions. Jen Kramer mentioned that I ought to make an official version, and post it for all to see.

A better way to set module positions in Joomla

Written by Jeremy Wilken

Today I found myself wanting to change the default behavior of Joomla 1.7, and the only way to do that was to hack the core. However a creative solution came to light, and a new plugin was born to take control of this seemingly basic, but very annoying functionality in the Joomla administrator.

The Joomla Development Strategy

Written by Jeremy Wilken

There is some confusion about how Joomla is going to be maintained and further developed. To be honest, I have questions myself, and details about the strategy are somewhat outlined here http://developer.joomla.org/strategy.html, but also hasn't been updated since 1.6 was released and other comments and details around the Joomla communication lines add to the confusion over what is going to happen.

What is certain

These are the new goals of the development strategy.

  • Joomla is going to attempt a shorter release cycle. This means instead of 2.5 years between releases, only 6 months.
  • Every 3rd release is considered a long term support release. The other releases are standard support releases.
  • Long term support means it will be supported (bugs, security, etc) until 3 months after the next long term supported release
  • Standard support means this release will only be supported about 6 months, basically only until the next release.
  • The trunk (a term for the place where the final Joomla code is stored) is to be always stable, so in other words the idea is to always have an installable version of Joomla there.
  • Automated tests have been added, and are required for additional updates and changes.
  • Upgrade paths are planned between short term releases, and between long term releases only.
